We have a Leopold Danio that has got quite fat. We thought it must be pregnant, but it has been like this for at least 4 weeks. Does this type of fish lay eggs or give birth to young?

Danios are oviparious or egg laying. As you've noticed, the females are fatter than males especially when they're carrying eggs.
They are fairly easy to spawn and will lay eggs in the community tank. You'll need 2 or 3 males though.
But the chances of the eggs hatching are minute as all the fish, including the parents, will avidly eat them.
If you want fish to breed, get some platies, swordtails, mollies or guppies. These give birth to live young but again, the chance of them surviving is small unless you have a densly planted tank
Hope this helps a bit
