Recovery time after speying

My collie bitch is being spayed today and the vet reckons she will only be out of sorts for a couple of days.   Does anyone agree/disagree/care to comment?

I have never owned a dog since being married only cats, but when I have had the tom's or queen's sterilized the vet has always said to keep them quiet, I'veyet to see it happen because as soon as I have let them out of the pet carrier when I have them home, they gone stupid running around as if nothing has happened.   :-)

I meant to add that it might be different for dogs, with them being bigger the operation would be more complex and they need that recovery time.  :-)

My bitch only took about a day to recover, it was like nothing had happened to her the day after. Wouldn't it also depend on the type of dog? mine was a mongrel and built like a brick out house, NOTHING fazed her!

I have had two weimaraner bitches spayed now and tend to agree that once the anaesthetic has worn off, the hardest thing is keeping them quiet and walking on lead only till the stitches come out... mind you that tends to be par for the course. We had our dog done at age 12 cos he had prostate trouble and over the years, a few of our dogs have had injuries that needed stitching and it tended to be the same thing, get over the anaesthetic then create hell!!

My baby was spayed at 6 months, now she's 9. She came out of the surgery completely well-tempered and seem to still have quite a bit of energy.

She spent one night after the surgery at the vet's clinic for observation and safety, then she went home with me the next day---no problems. She was just as active as usual...and her suture healed in less than a week. After the staples were removed, about 1 week later you couldn't even tell she'd had surgery.

So, I do agree with 2 days...recovery on most spays is not a huge deal...just keep a close eye on their eating and drinking and be sure they do not irritate or bite at their suture while it's healing.

When my bitch was speyed she was a bit reluctant to walk out far the following day but within a few days she was as right as rain...thats when the fun started cos she didn't understand why she couldn't go off the lead and follow lots of interesting smells!!!

Many thanks for all your replies.   She's quite amazing....almost back to normal within 2 days although she has to be stopped from licking/chewing her stitches til they come out next week.  5 stars all round!
