I think God had a hand in it ;-)
Byerly Turk, Godolphin Barb, Darley Arabian. Of course the foals all came "from" the mares that these stallions were mated with.
Some thoroughbreds have been crossed with quarter horses and other breeds somewhere along their lineage to obtain a desired result. For some obscure reason the female lines in horse breeding don't seem to be held in such a high regard as the males, but of course, there had to be at least some mares to breed with the 'three'.
