I am not convinced number 5 is Oliver Cromwell but I have nothing better to add. However I think it maybe something to do with William III and his downfall when his horse stumbled on a molehill at Hampton Court leading eventually to his death. enemies toasted " The gentleman in the black velvet waistcoat". Although "Black Velvet" and "Mr Mole" are racehorses, they are not particularly famous.
