Asthma Help Please

This question relates to my cat, Frankie, who has Asthma

Frankie was diagnosed with Asthma in 2009. His initial attack was caused by me spraying Febreeze (?sp?) all over the Living-room.

• If he is taking his daily Prednisolone and seems well should I be concerned that he is having coughing fits at various times during the day. He is worse in the morning.

• He currently takes 2mg of Prednisolone each day. He is a pig when it comes to food so I stick it in a treat (Dreamies).

I realise, sometimes, that he is not a human being but he is a mammal.

I get myself in a panic when he starts coughing. I know that I will make myself ill if I don’t sort this out in my brain. I believe that this may be part of my Manic Depression

No - he stuffed his face with Whiskas, then ate his sister's breakfast and is sleeping in my bed. I know that he is not unwell or suffering but I need to implant this information in my brain.

I'm off back to bed - he might allow me a few inches of bed to sleep on. They are strange animals. I can't remember the last time I was allowed to go to the bathroom alone.

Presumably you have ditched the Febreze? I may be staying the bleeding obvious, but he needs plenty of fresh air and likely triggers eliminated.

Hopkirk - the spray stuff is gone, but he is an indoor cat as we live in a city centre.

Anne - I have been meaning to ask this question for ages. I know that he is relatively healthy. It is complicated but this type of panic is not unusual for me. It is horrendous though, I get obsessed with a problem (irrational or rational) that I am unable to control.

I was hoping that someone would come along and say that their Asthmatic family member coughs in the morning and, sometimes, at other times but have been told that this is okay.

I know you adore Frankie and Merlin, you have been very open about your mental health issues,. Is Frankie better tonight? I hope you feel less anxious now, I won't insult you by asking if you are taking your medication.

Not a cat... but my son has asthma and had a couple of really bad attacks years ago before he was given inhalers. His only symptom is coughing- and I also feel panicky if I hear him coughing. Touch wood, it hasn't meant anything in years. But their job is to worry us...xx

Better than bottling your panic up, you asked here, much better.

It's not unusual for symptoms to be worse at a given point in the day/night.

Frankie is chasing his sister up and down and up and down the stairs. He is the picture of health. However, Merlin will soon get fed up and punch the living daylights out of him.

I know it is when I do it too... but that doesn't always stop it. Do you have some kind of reliever or medication "just in case"?

pixie - maybe your son and my cat are related. When he coughs it sounds like he is also hacking up a hairball. The noise sounds serious.

mamy - you are right, this site can be good for the odd rant. :-)

He probably is... :-) that sounds like a healthy cough.

pixie - he has a Ventolin inhaler as well as his steroid tablets.

His sister is now headbutting me - I had better go and see if she has punched her brother ... again!

I think its not so much irrational as your " thing" which you recognise, Susan, we all have our " things" :-)
