A friend of mine has just got two puppies one male and one female. Does anyone know how old they will be before the female pup might become pregnant. She obviously does NOT want this to happen. Would be grateful if anyone knows

Phone your vet and ask how soon they can both be neutered - usually around six months. Unfortunately there are too many beautiful unwanted puppies and dogs in the world. Please get them done !!

Maybe you misread the question quizmonkey. Just because someone gets a male and a female puppy does not mean they do not know anything about them. Its a reasonable question to ask. MrsM is asking at what age the bitch could become pregnant which probably means she is looking out for her to make sure this doesn't happen. Either having one spayed or neutered. The best thing would be to ask your vet when you register them. All pups should pay a visit to the vet a soon as you get them to get them checked over.

Exactly Maggie01 - you just supported my answer completely.
How do you work that one out. You've lost me there

There are some really good answers on this, but I would like to add my 2 cents worth if you don't mind? I'll try to make this as simple as I can.

Male puppies have testosterone running thru their system from the beginning, at 5 months they get a huge burst and that is when all kinds of mating/marking behaviors usually start to occur, they are essentially teenagers by 5 months, getting a dog nuetered before they are 5 months old will benefit him allot, besides the fact that he will heal quicker (due to the fact that they are younger), the female should be (spayed) done before the first heat cycle, this could be as early as 17 weeks ( had a guy come up to me the other day his small dog was already in heat at this age, it was a surprise for him and he was scrambling for help), the reason some vets do not do these procedures real early is that the veins and things are so tiny, and some have a belief in the MYTH that males and females need the hormones to grow BIG, but research has said this is not true, females don't get a burst of hormones until they go into heat. I have seen plenty of dogs from the rescue shelters who alter their dogs before adoption and they grow into fine looking dogs.

Also a word of caution with 2 dogs make sure you train them and try to have alone time with each one and alone time without each other, 2 dogs will BOND to each other better than with humans, if you need better info on this topic just ask.

get them done as soon as possible !

This happened to me,my dog had pups we kept a male one, sure enough mum became pregnant. She had to have an abortion and spaying.

I was told as soon as the bitch has a season it can get pregnant.
