I agree with Labour on this. In fact I don't know why anyone would not want to wait until the child is born to see what sex it is. I enjoyed the uncertainty with mine, we had boys and girls names ready etc, I stood ready with the decoration materials for the room etc.

Sometimes it's handy to know.
If the parents want to know the gender of the foetus and reliable methods are available to achieve this, then the option should be available.
Yes, if the information is there, parents should be able to know the sex if they want.
yes it should be available. But unless it's for medical reasons the parents should pay. I had an AFT with my last pregnancy and sex of child was determined 100%. I was given the choice if I wanted to know and said yes of course. At that point all the girl names were forgotten about, babies nursery could be prepared with suitable decoration (yes I'm old fashioned) as we knew what we were getting.
There's no need to pay as it's part of a 16 week scan anyway.
The article is not about the 16 week scan which often cannot see the sex of the baby. Its about the Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT) used by the NHS to test for genetic conditions. People can pay for it privately at the moment to discover a baby's gender but some are using this test to see if they are expecting a girl, which in some sectors of the british community is not good news. Labour think some of these people may using the results of the test to abort female babies.
Only for medical reasons, where a sex linked condition is a distinct possibility. It should become an offence to undergo a termination after a gender test without medical cause. It is the ultimate in sex discrimination, a hate crime in my books
in a few years all this will be irrelevant. the gender of children will not be logged until the individual is old enough to decide for itself.
"which in some sectors of the british community is not good news. Labour think some of these people may using the results of the test to abort female babies."

If that were the case,Aunt Lydia, then I believe the infanticide Law should be updated and rigourously enforced.
I don't think this service should be provided unless paid for.
LOl..LOL...^^^
sqad , has it .It may be needed if the mother has a genetic disorder that can only be passed on to either male only or female only children.
the infanticide law is about infants.
jno
I know. That is why I said updated. That means changed to accomodate this practice being stopped (not terminated)
they're covered by the abortion act.

the article is highlighting the possibility of aborting children simply because they are the "wrong" sex, That's what worries me.
Yes TTT, all part of the problem of heading for 'designer' babies too.
The nipt is only available on the NHS in wales at the moment, and only after a poor result from the general screening that's offered to women in their 12 week scan. By poor, i mean a "high risk" result. Even if the nipt shows a proble, women still have to have an amniocentesis to confirm before you can get an abortion (as far as i'm aware). so the situation you describe just isn't happening (on the NHS) at the moment
They could know later when termination for trivial reasons are no longer an option.
legal termination for trivial reasons is not available at all at any stage
although i suppose it depends on your interpretation of "trivial"
