Hi Dogsnobby,

You wont need to visit the vet if it is a tick. First of all DO NOT PULL OUT. All you need to do is put a blob of vaseline on the end of the tick (i.e the opposite end to the head which is in your dogs skin). Ticks breath thru their bums and this will suffocate it. It will die and fall off eventually.

Never pull a tick out as this will leave the head in the dog and it will get infected and you will then possibly need to seek vets help then.

Good Luck!

Hi Again,

Another thought.......! You can buy special hooks that remove ticks safely, these can be bought at the vets and only cost a couple of pounds. Don't use tweezers.

Sam

dab some parafin onto it - that will do the trick also.
also vasseline suffocates them if you have no parafin, i didn't know this but it works well

Thanks for your answers, you have been most helpfull.

happy new year

If you are reasonably dexterous and can get through the fur, you can take hold of the tick close to the skin and unscrew it. Keep slight tension on, don't squeeze the body and rtate the tick counter clockwise. it will come out whole and alive Honest!!

I have a weimaraner and despite treatment, she still picks up the odd one and this method works every time. It is also the method used locally in our minor injuries units to remove them from people

then pop to the vet when it is open and get some frontline!!

my cat brings in ticks sometimes even if u put vasaline on them they sumtimes dont come off we burnt the bum of one n it died n fell off but if u put vasaline on it and it still wont come off try turning it a little and tugging at it this will lossen its grip and make it fall off
