First Day Back

Well it's all over now, bar the shouting.

I'm not a fan of Christmas but the few days off are much appreciated, although they seem to be gone in a blink. With the festivities over it's back to reality for most today, including myself.

At least I'm working from home today and it's an inset day too so I don't have to leave the house.

Who else is back to work today and are you feeling the post-festive blues?

Actually 50% of the work I do from Monday to Sunday is through choice but I won't sit down and cry come Thursday when I get a double overtime payment.

What's the temp like in Downsideupland now?

Rather pleasant, 37c in the shade.
No humidity!
Dry heat is good heat.
It can get down to -8C during winter and up to 48c during summer where I reside.

Well, I never would have thought you'd experience -8°C but 48°C is something I experienced most summers in Spain. Night time was dreadful because you couldn't have your air con on or the neighbours would denounce you to the Guardia.

Do you get mozzies and similar in that dry heat, 1ozzy? It was always very humid in Spain and I used to get eaten alive.

No mozzies, unless it rains, but plenty of other creatures you wouldn't like.

Snakes?

Yep, but most of them wiggle a mile from people.
They are more scared of us than we are of them.
Lots of spiders too, ooh, scarey.

I know you think I'm a complete wuss, but I just don't like things that crawl and sliver, especially ones with a killer bite. I would struggle with most reptiles and amphibians too, although I would love a pet tortoise :)

Don't get me wrong, I am an animal lover, I think it's just an irrational phobia with some creatures.

I can understand that, Mrs Oz was paranoid about snakes when we moved here 22 years ago.
We have only had 2 snakes in the yard during that time.
One I shooed away, it was harmless, the other I beheaded.
Even though it's a protected species it was highly venomous and known to be aggressive.

That was very brave of you and I think you did the right thing in order to protect yourselves and pets, etc.

Did you live in a more urban area before?

Lived most of my life in the outskirts of a city, still got the creatures you abhor.
Just more of them now.

I too love the edible ones.
Not keen on the ones that bite or sting.

There were a fair few jellyfish in the sea when we went down to Weymouth in the summer. I wouldn't have noticed them if someone else hadn't pointed them out to me. I got out of the sea pretty sharpish, which is a shame because the water was so warm.

Am I right in thinking that you originated in the UK or did I dream that? I know Stewey / Sanmac was born over here.

It wouldn't have been a dream, more so a nightmare.

Do you remember much about life over here?

I moved to Hereford in October 1980, when I was nearly four years old. I was born in London and lived briefly in Aldershot. I remember the day we moved to Hereford but I don't have one single memory pre-dating that. Weird.

I remember nothing about UK life, came here in nappies.
Offspring of 10 quid tourists.
