So what are your akternatives ? Giving up, or being open and honest and hoping he is a good natured fellow ?
I'd ask what your ages are, but think it may be considered rude of me, so I won't.

It wouldn't bother me, but that's probably because from time to time I have been in the same position, I have a denture upper plate with one front tooth (had it for nearly 70 years now) and from time to time it breaks off and while awaiting repairs I am gap-toothed. OK it sometimes got funny looks, but didn't really bother me. One advantage of Covid was I could mask it - since Covid is rampant again, why not adopt the mask solution.
If you have lost a tooth accidentally and you are getting it fixed, he should understand, I would.
If you lost a visible tooth years ago and didn't get it fixed, that indicates lack of self-respect and that would be a turnoff for me, but an accident is just that.
If he can't see past a temporary change in your appearance, he's too shallow to bother seeing him again.
Good luck.
