They'd go through 4 fat balls and completely empty 3 feeders in a day .... it wasn't this that bothered me ..... it was the mess they left on the fence, plus the grass around the feeding area got trashed.
I remember doing a quick count one day and I counted roughly 50 birds in my garden ..... I ended up giving my bird feeder, bath and all the food away.

It's a joy to watch the different birds,goldfinch,blue tits,blackbirds,
sparrows, pigeons, and lots of others including a couple of robins, when i'm sat eating in our kitchen i can see them at the feeders hung high in our trees it is well worth the trouble of keep filling the feeders and cleaning up the mess,it really is one of lifes pleasures.

OH feeds the birds assiduously - it costs him quite a bit. The problem we have is that the local corvid population has spotted this nirvanah and lie in wait. As soon as he has hung up new fat balls, filled peanut feeder and supplied feeding stations with grain - a black cloud descends. Now the pigeons have arrived and are squabbling with the crows and ravens (and jackdaws). In between the small garden birds just get the crumbs! Any ideas anyone?
jourdain - you can buy bird feeders that only allow small birds to feed, both to hang in trees or place on the ground. The ones on the ground do not allow anything bigger than a blackbird, so keeps the pigeons and other larger birds out. I have both and very rarely have large birds visiting because they know they can't access the food. You can google them. Although my local Pets at Home sells the ones that you can hang in trees and bushes.
fitdarren I bought one of the Ground Feeders from the RSPB recommended by you on another thread. I still throw food over a wide area but I can't keep my eyes of the GF, it's hilarious. The Wood Pigeons and Jackdaws are strutting around it for ages trying to reach the food, trying to put their heads through the mesh but can't. When they eventually clear off a male Blackbird will appear followed shortly by Mrs B and they will eat the food that has fallen very near the edge. The Robins can get inside and that is a joy to watch. Thank you for the recommendation.
