no. cancel culture.

yes, it is frightening when free speech is threatened.

I find it frightening - and actually sickening - that anyone in a civilised society thinks that what happened on 7 October is acceptable - and even moreso that apparently intelligent people are not appalled by it but instead cheer such an opinion.  I'd expect it of the barbarians who committed the atrocities but not of supposedly educated people.  Nothing excuses unprovoked slaughter.

"I find it frightening - and actually sickening - that anyone in a civilised society thinks that what happened on 7 October is acceptable " - there's at least 2 on here, one of them called them "freedom fighters".

I know.

Supporting a proscribed terrorist organisation is an offence under sections  (12(1)) and (12(1A)) of the Terrorism Act 2000, so it absolutely does not come under the heading of either cancel culture or free speech.

they should be made to sit in a theatre with film footage and pictures of the oct 7 victims, but they would say we should be made to sit and watch the palestine victims, erm no oct7= no palestinians dead from the cross fire, but don't let that get in the way of anti jew vitriol hatred.

Strange. The OU allows this to be said:

‘What we saw on October 7 was not terrorism . . . these were acts of heroism of a people who have been oppressed.’

But it will not allow anybody to speak who suggests a man pretending to be a woman is not a woman.

"Supporting a proscribed terrorist organisation is an offence under sections  (12(1)) and (12(1A)) of the Terrorism Act 2000, "

That's Mr Starmer in schtuck then. I believehe (or one of his lackies) has just bunged the mob who have taken over Syria a cheque for £11m.  😀

Oxford Union debates are where people learn to debate, i.e. defend or attack a motion. They don't have to believe what they are advocating or berating, they just need to polish their skills to win votes.

It's laughable that people can have such lack of awareness that they see no issue about them attacking the free speech of others, while defending the free speech of those they support.

Scanned the article. Debates are just debates. If someone spouts nonsense the opposition should be able to show them up.

Atheist, you seem to have missed a bit of NJ's post at 16.50.

I think we all know what a debating society is: my point about being 'scary' isn't about what was said, which is bad enough, but if the reporting is correct, the amount of applause it received.

Clapping is to be banned?

Prodigy's that would have made better sheet stains.

wodger mean? this sort of thing happens everyday on AB

There are too many dead babies in Gaza and make that Lebanon and Syria

Scream scream scream - this is the most harassing and racially insulting antisemitic remark PP has made re since the last one. Suspend him or ban him.

I think there should be more Free Speech

as Lord Quondy said somewhere: "defending a right of someone to say what you agree with is not enough. There should be a freedom to express stuff you DON'T agree with."

and I agree with Lord Quondy. ( too idle to find which law lord it was in fact and what he actually said)

Did anyone listen to 'Any Questions' on the day after the attack?   It came from Bradford.

There was horror from the panel when whoops and cheers were heard from some in the audience.

The panel were shaken - shows how far from understanding the real country they are trying to rule they are.  There is still a curtain between academic understanding and 'La Verite'.

It's being investigated by the police. I'd only be frightened if it wasn't.

I don't think you have perhaps bothered to read the article, it wasn't just 'clapping' but they were in support of what Hamas had carried out. This is the relevant passage;

'According to Human Rights Watch, Hamas committed numerous war crimes and crimes against humanity against Israeli civilians. These crimes included rape, sexual violence and mutilation of women.

A harrowing report from the Association of Rape Crisis Centres in Israel found similar evidence:

‘From the testimonies of eyewitnesses, rescue and medical forces, a clear pattern of deliberate harm emerges to the genital organs of both men and women. This includes, among other things, direct and targeted shooting, mutilation of organs, and destruction and burning of sexual and intimate organs . . . Bodies of women were found with gunshot wounds targeted at the breasts and genital mutilation, some with severed breasts . . . Bodies of men were found with their genitalia severed, while others had their genitalia shot and mutilated . . . Another form of assault included the insertion of weapons into genital organs – nails, grenades, and knives.’

The report continues in this vein for 34 pages.'
