The egg. I read it in The Daily Mail the other day! I cant remember how they came to this conclusion though!
Actually, for those that adhere to macro-evolution, the answer would have to be a non-chicken. Evolutionary theory teaches that birds, hence chickens, originated with some form of dinosaur predecessor, which laid eggs for reproduction. At some point in time, a dinosaur laid and egg, out of which the bird family arose, therefore the (as yet unidentified) dinosaur species came first. I'm quite certain this settles the argument, no?
To add just a little to C's response above...
Most scientists believe that birds developed from reptiles. Since most reptiles to this day reproduce by laying eggs, it's rational to assume that the first bird-like creature came from an egg, too. (Genetic material remains constant throughout life, so the first creature that evolved into what we would consider to be a bird must have originally existed as an embryo inside an egg.) It would then have laid eggs and - over millions of years, perhaps - birds as we know them slowly developed and produced different species. The present-day chicken is one of these, but - 'way back when - its great-great-grand-daddy almost certainly came from an egg.
The egg pre-dated the bird, if you believe in evolution. Of course, fundamentalist believers in the Bible will say that God created all the creatures as creatures. In that case, the bird pre-dated the egg. Take your pick!
Dinosaurs laid eggs, they existed before chickens ergo the egg came first simple!

The egg - There's more recipes for eggs than chicken.

Oh, and if you want to get "really clever" - a species has to develop before it can reproduce. Ergo, by definition, create the chicken, and thus the egg (for more chickens).

i think it depends on your beliefs. I believe in god and that he created all things just like humans were created in adult form so too were the animals adult males and females to create offspring.
