can any one tell me the reason why fur cones close up when emersed in water?

Fir cones probably close to keep the seeds dry as the seeds are contained inbetween the bits that open and close!
Probably because water causes wood to swell, and at the base of each individual segment of the cone, the outside is being wetted more effectively and thus swelling faster than the inside.
