can swans live on the sea and if not do they sometimes stop on the sea to rest as i have seen a pair recently on the sea

At home on both fresh and salt water
There are several salt water locations round the UK where swans live permanently.
Thats what made swansea famous, is'nt it ;-)
Swans are migratory - so I would imagine so! It's also true that they mate for life - this is probably why it's unlucky to see an odd number of swans!
