My dog ( a nine month old bitch) has started losing the hair on her belly and thighs - is this doggy alopecia?

more likely to be a flea or mite allergy or the onset of mange, there is a foul smelling potion available from vets that you wash into the area, dont take this as gospel, get an expert opinion first garf
or to add to that it could be that if you have had central heating or air conditioning on or you house is too humid this can dry out the dogs skin as one of my dogs had these symptoms years ago garf
It is better to ask a vet than get guesses here.

In principal I agree with you -but having taken the dog to the vet, been given a dose of antibiotics that clearly have not worked, I'm left in the original position of wondering if anyone has any ideas?!
Could it be to do with hormones?

Has she just been in season at six months:?

I seem to remember a bitch I had that had not been spayed losing her hair on her belly and thighs around the time she would have had pups, also around the same time she used to build a 'nest'.

Maybe it is so the pups can find the teats and to keep the area clean.

Just a theory!

I never got any joy out of the vets either, just a comment that skin problems were their main earner.

That's an interesting answer, I'm hoping she comes into season soon so I can get her spayed, I think you may have something there as the hair loss is even and regular, not patchy or 'mangy' . Yes, I can imagine that skin problems are a great earner! Thanks.
