Yes. In the highlands and islands of Scotland it was common for a farmer to move his cattle to another island for grazing.

Very often the bull or cow would swim home.

Yes, pretty good swimmers.
I remember on a few occaisions when I chased a bullock back to a river bank and watched it swim effortlessly back to the field on the other side of the river,where it was supposed to be.
