Name that dog breed...!

While on holiday in Germany, we saw a man with a lovely dog. It looked very much like a Yorkshire Terrier but wasabout the size of a rough collie. Black and tan with short straight fur. Well behaved on a lead and patient while he chatted with friends. My partner and I both agreed he was lovely and the kind of dog we would like but have been unable to find the breed on any websites. Can anyone help? Unfortunately my German wasn't good enough to ask the man at the time.

Schnauzers don't come in black and tan, and I wouldn't say they have short straight fur. There is a breed called a German Hunt Terrier which stands about 16" that come in smooth or rough coat and come in black and tan, and cholocate and tan or red.

Did it have a docked tail? When you say it looked like a Yorkshire Terrier, did you mean the face? Or the colouring?

Hovawarts are another German breed that come in black and tan, but they are longer coated.

Thanks for all the suggestions but nothing has rung the bell yet! It definitely wasn't a schnauzer as that was our original choice before seeing this one. It simply looked like a well trimmed Yorkie, colour, coat, probably a longer and more rouded snout though - sort of ariedale but not quite. Someone on another forum suggested it might be a fox terrier with long hair but I've not been able to find any pics. Thanks for all the help though - I know it's a long shot. PS: The Hovawart is cute though!

It's unlikely to be a smooth-coated fox terrier as they usually have mainly white bodies.

My guess is a Manchester Terrier:

I've just discovered that the database in the link above is a subset of the information available on the Kennel Club website.

Then click on 'Breed Standards' in the left-hand menu. This will lead you pictures of all 203 breeds recognised by the Kennel Club.

This is a bit of a long shot but how about a German Pointer

Was it a Border Terrier? They are bred in different clours, grizzle, tan and blue.

Hello again, everyone. And thank you to all that answered my question. I followed Buenchico's link to the Kennel Club and the nearest I can up with is: Pyranean Sheepdog ( http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/discoverdogs /pastoral/pyreneansheep.htm ). It says that this can have some black fur which would make it black and faun as opposed to black and tan but it does have a look of a large Yorkie about it. I'm going to make some more enquiries now I have something to go on. Thank you all once again. Rachael
