We have a pond and I've noticed a web stretching across the pond, which is about 5-6ft across. The web has ties to the sides of the pond in every direction with the main fly catching section in the centre of the pond. Some of the ties have sub-ties (if you know what I mean). The whole structure appears so complicated I find it incredible that such a small creature could have thought out the design. How do they build it?

That sounds like one intelligent spider, just think of the insects it'll catch in that position.
Clever spider! He'll do well and get nice and fat. Just hope he can swim in case an extra big dragon fly wrecks his web and sends him for a early bath.
