pet names

in the pub tonight, we were discussing why we gave our pets the names we gave them. it seems clear we love our animals as though they were our children, yet we didnt take very much care with their names, they all had jokey names, such as a dog called 'deefer' as in 'd for dog'. I named the chickens i had as a kid after enid blyotn's famous five characters. I'd like to know if any of you have unusual names for your pets and why :-)

I'll have a pint of yours, or are you in a time warp. My cat was called Kia [female] cos I thought it was a brill name, pinched from Black Fox running. Previous dog was called Misty, when I collecvted him, he had dreadful wind [from the French Mistral] Current dog is Jet. We had two originally, daughter had named one Amber [she wanted a golden Lab but we couldn't afford it] A girl at work said if one's Amber what about [on a gemstone theme] go with Jet. He's � Rottweiler & � German Shepherd, and like his owner a big old boy! Had a fish as a child, goldfish guess the orginal name "Goldie" ;+)

yep i got message, thankyou, all very flattering, being the subject of a question was like seeing your name up in lights. i used to 'socialise' retired racing greyhouds (very endearing dogs, incredibly gentle natures, but they had never seen stairs, glass doors or other breeds of dogs before, they had so much to learn and they made me laugh everyday), i called all the greyhounds treacle, its a very good name.

Before we got our kitten, we decided to have a name all ready so that it wouldn't just become "puss" or "cat". But because we didn't know the sex of the cat, we thought we would have to come up with a unisex name so my husband came up with the name Pickle. We both liked it and settled for the name. Just as well because for the first couple of months of it's life we thought that it was a she until I discovered a couple of tiny lumps which my husband insisted was matted hair......the vet confirmed to me that Pickle was in fact a he! Well, of course we have done the best thing for him and now I suppose you could call him an "it" but he also now answers to all kinds of names, Pud, pud-e-tat, but most of all, for some strange reason he seems to like the name Pooh best!

My recently deceased cat (sob) was called Cruise. Everyone thought this was because I had a fondness for Tom, however the real reason is that I felt this is what cats do - cruise around. It suited her.

One cat is Schnorrie (named after a kitten we knew in Germany). Other cat is Tribble (from Star Trek.) We've also had hamsters called Brumas (after a polar bear in London Zoo many years ago), Percival Pouches, Blossom, Smirnoff and Alice, and a pair of budgies called Im and Er.
Mum and Dad's cat was called Cat. The vet couldn't handle this lack of handle, and insisted on calling him Henry.

which reminds me... we had a cat called nelson (eye infection when he arrived with us, nelson was a rash decision made while waiting to see the vet), my very elderly grandmother has some sort of mental block on the word nelson and was convinced he was called austin, the cat was also happier with austin.

My Cat is called Tansy ... I spent ages trying to come up with name and it just sounded nice It really suits her ...

We've got five cats: Bilbo (as my Ma's favourite book is LotR); Mikey (because she (Ma) used to have a lodger who always got drunk and forgot the cats' names, so they were ALL 'Mikey'. She decided that at least he'd be able to get ONE of them right); Hansel and Gransel (because my four year old nephew couldn't say Gretel properly); and my personal pussy; Amber. Was originally Andromeda, due to an interest in Greek mythology, but since morphed into Amber, which is FAR less of a mouthful

OUr cat was brought home from the pub in a box. When we took it out of the box the tiny thing crept about looking at everything(as they do) as we tried to decide on a name. We decided that the next thing it touched would be the name. IT went to a lovely bottle of wine sitting ready on the floor. Hence VINO - good job it turned out to be a boy!

Treacle - your post about "Nelson" reminded me, as a not very bright schoolboy I bought a brown mouse [like a muppet I thought it was a tame one - wrong!] from a mate in class. I called hime Jasper [god knows why]. when he got an eye infection and lost one eye, we renamed him Nelson. Had a westy called Alex which my Gran couldn't pronounce - something to do with her nashers being loose she'd always call the poor dog the cat's name "Sukie" Confused everyone. It think the cat's name was from a song Sukie Yakki ;+)

We have a tabby cat which was called Tiger cos no-one could be bothered to think of anythign else. (very originall) This has morphed over the years to be Tiger Timmy bean bag. The tiger Tim came form Tiny Tim cos the cat always looked like a young Cat even though he's now 17 and the bean bag came from a time when I used to lie with my head on his belly (not very hard) and it felt like a bean bag.

Many years ago my ex-boyfriend insisted on calling our kitten Murphy - a terrible name which never stuck; in the end I called her Micia pronounced Meecha which is Italian for Puss. Now I "share" a cat with a family three doors down; we both feed her and share the cost of vaccinations etc. She was originally a stray so she never had a name; I used to say "that Cat's in the garden again" or similar; in the end, she became Micia too. The family three doors down call her Puss. Same name in two languages.

A friend had a cat called 'cooking fat' - think Cockney rhyming slang :) and our cat is called Storm as he turned up on our door step the morning after a large storm

Treack - one more, wifey was reading thru the site last nite, in a previous marriage her man had spent the mortgage, new hall carpet & food money on a pair of boxer dogs, [one of each sex]. The vets bill alone nearly skinted them and one day they'd mated. Only one puppy survirved nursed thru by Mrs P. The vets bill for his survival cost the rest of her savings - which was for a new sofa, boy dogs resulting name [to make sure her old man never made a similar mistake - which he did of course] Chesterfield

probly the most exciting thing for me when i get a new pet is thinking of a name i recently got a 7 week old boy budgie i already had a name picked out for him before i even seen him but it's a good thing that "Malibu" suited him so well because he is a white bird with an awsome bright bluey purpley colour on his back... when i was 5 my mum brought me home a little tabby kitten i named her "Kitty" how original! i still have her to this day i'm 15 so shes gettin old but shes still fit as a fiddle for her age .. despite the fact shes missing an eye from a colision with a moving car.. i also have a dog named Nicky which i named when i was ten not sure why.. and i had 2 chickens white one was Stella (sadly passed away 2 days ago) and a brown one Gretal.. who is sadly all alone in her pen :(
