I've had Gilly my Chinchilla about 2 weeks now and I need a bit of advice from other Chinny owners. I have used standard hay as a floor covering in his cage as the bottom of it is made of steel mesh which I imagine to be uncomfortable to walk on. I've noticed him eating this standard hay instead of the Timothy hay from his rack. Is this ok for him to do this or should I use a different covering? Thanks, Sue

Hi, it's fine for him to eat any hay he wants, you must however cover the floor of the cage as prolonged exposure may cause a complaint called Bumble Foot. I don't have a Chin....I keep Degus, but their housing requirements are the same. I cover any meshed flooring with card, wood lino tiles and terracotta tiles [just happened to have some laying about] all of these need to be cleaned/replaced as needed. Try the forum Pat has listed....it'd pretty good.
