Having served in the army and been north of Aden, I can tell you I've seen quite a few of these beasties.
And Merton, I have a colour slide of one we caught in our tent. It was a female, and photographed alongside a ruler, it measured 10 inches.
Though non-poisonous, we were told they can carry diseases, and anyone bitten by one would have to stay under observation in the military hospital for a week or more.
I am unaware of anyone I knew ever having been bitten by one, but one look at their mandibles, like four big rose thorns, and you'd want to stay clear!
