i have a 8 months old jack rus dog.he is top. whats bugging me though if you give him a bone he'll bury it (nothing new there i thought thats what dogs do) but only yesterday he un-earthed a bone of his ,and started getting the marrow out of it,on close inspection i see little maggot type things, where the marrow is.he also hides bits of steak and dog treats until they are rock hard???is this normal for a jack. as this is my first. i have had a dog in the past, but he never done anything like this

The dirty little beggar! It is probably because he is the type of dog he is. Jack russells like to be "working" ,they make good rat catchers etc so they aren't too fussy what they put in their mouth. where he hides food is his special safe place . I'd leave him to hide bones but wait a day and dig it back up and bin it.

How mean coco pops! If he has buried it, it is because he wants to save it for later. Dogs have a much stronger digestive system than ours, and can eat things that we would think were unsavoury. The odd maggot won't hurt him.

It is indeed something that dogs would do in the wild to make sure they had food saved for a rainy day. He probably gets as much pleasure from burying it and digging it up as other dogs do from eating it straight away.

We 'hang' meat like hams for ages, this is probably his way of maturing the bones! They probably taste better after a couple of weeks buried.

I used to have a Belgian Shepherd who loved meat etc. when it had 'matured', we used to joke that she saw the maggots as a bit of extra protein (they eat them in the jungle don't they?). Used to have to watch her like a hawk on walks in case she spotted a rotting carcase, once in her mouth you had zero chance of getting anything back. She died of old age, so it never harmed her!

I also have a jack russell, he also burys bones and treats in the garden. I never has a jack rusell before Jake and I find him comical. I think its just his way of "saving it till later"! I have recently got him a playmate Missy, staffordshire bull terrier, she is 9 weeks old, and off she trots in the garden with Jake to bury treats!! they get on really well and look after each other and learn each other habits!
