I recently handed in a purse that i had found. How long will the police wait for someone to claim it? Will they be 'proactive' in finding the owner? 'Wil they let me know when it is claim?

No & no. Enquire yourself after three months, if it's unclaimed then you may claim it.
i thought no and yes. The police take your details and are obliged to give it to you if not claimed within the 3 months by the real owner

Well i don't know myself for certain, but if they waited for people to claim stuff they handed in and peopple did not claim it what would they do with it?
In my home town about once every two months all the local police stations send all their unclaimed property, which will include items handed in and items recovered after theft etc, to a public auction house.
The Post Office does the same, only more often, with 'undeliverable' items.
