Rye grass irritation

Help! Anytime I mow the lawn, all the blades of rye grass just bend under the advancing mower blades and then spring up again.
So once I'm finished mowing, I need to go over the lawn with the hand shears and chop down the blades of rye-grass... very irritating!
Any advice? Do I need a better lawn-mower?

No, lay a large tarpaulin sheet over the grass area to kill it and then resow a decent grass seed or else lay turf.

I assume you are using a cylinder mower.Invest in a rotary type this will cure your problem.

As bright spark says a rotary mower will solve this problem as the method of grass collection created by the cutter blade lifts the grass upwards to eject it to the collection box. A cylindar mower rolls it down at the front and the grass needs to be cut whilst it is still short and upstanding. A flymo of the hover type will also not solve your problem as this creates a downward air pressure to keep the hood of the mower up off the lawn to make it easy to move.

These grass stalks are known as 'bents' in the gardening game and the flowering stems of rye grass are particularly wirery and hard to mow if the grass is'nt cut very often.
The front roller on cylinder mowers tend to lay bents and things like dandelions and daisey's flat only to spring up again after you've gone over it.
I agree that a Rotary mower will cut the stalks more effectivly and if you prefer a stripey lawn, then you can get a rotary mower with a roller fitted to the rear, so choose carefully! Good Luck Tbird+
