shampooing dogs

my little darling has rolled in something completely rank. I honestly think a skunk could have sprayed him, its that bad. fox poo? anyway, im not sure what it is but i have never shampooed/bathed him in the entire time we have had him, but i really think today is the day. Anyway, can you shampoo dogs with people shampoo?

hi there, we have always had a dog and i have always used human shampoo, of course the experts would say no, but ive never had a problem. i dont use expensive brands just a cheapy one, and i don't ever use too much. just make sure you wash it completely out.

just as flemma has said I have always used people shampoo, followed by people conditioner and have never seen any bad effects, just so long as you rinse thoroughly, I too don't bath my dogs as a matter of course, They need the oils in their coats, but sometimes needs must as they say, and our little darlings love stinky things!! I had a dog that fell in a slurry pit once! boy did he stink, I was bathing him every day for a week and ever after he hated the water, bless him, good luck bathing your dog, remember to put a rubber mat in the bath or a towel so that he doesn't slip.

I personally wouldnt use people shampoo other than baby shampoo as the dogs skin is different to our scalp and human shampoo will remove all the natural oils, and a doggy shampoo will be better at getting out any odours. However, just wash tthe smelly area first, washing the whole dog will just spread the smell around, whichever shampoo you choose to use, dont put it on neat, but dilute it around 10 - 1 with warm water in a jug, wet the smelly area, and put on diluted shampoo. Rinse that, and do the dog all over. Rinse really really well, and wrap dog in towels 'before you get him out of the bath' as he will shake and probably run around the house like a nutter if he is anything like my lot.

I have read that tomato ketchup gets rid of really bad smells (like fox etc.). Use it the same as shampoo.

Of course you have to remember to rinse it off!!

kita I also read that, but also read it can stain the dogs coat too, so didnt want to mention it, ok if you have a red setter though!!
