cooked marrow bones

I bought some today from local market , but on way home could not remember if it was safe to give to dogs because they splinter , would the 12 pup be ok with one under supervision (I must be getting old lol) GypsyX

I would not recommend any bones at all, they can cause complications and can be dangerous.Its your decision but there are plenty of good products in the pet shops for chewing ect.Steer clear Gypsy .g

Hi, Gypsy & garner! While I agree in part with what you say, garner, some bones are safer than others & beef marrow bones don't splinter as easily as , say, lamb bones. You can actually buy roasted marrow bones from pet shops. The dog will probably get the marrow out of the middle then get fed up with the bone! (If he's anything like mine). I've always given beef marrow bones to my GSDs & have had no problems - a beef marrow bone isn't that prone to splintering. We've probably both confused you completely now, Gypsy!!!

I would not entertain the idea, even under supervision. If the dog got a piece of bone in his throat, how confident are you that you would be able to retrieve it to avoid him choking?

Whilst many people give bones on a regular basis, and had no problems there are others who have suffered dire consequences.

My first dog used to get bones - beginning of the 1980s and he just chomped them like sweets. His dad was a bull mastiff and his mum a german shepherd, but even allowing for massive jaws I have no idea how he managed to just massacre it. He didn't bury them - he just ate them.

Thank you all for your replys, I just read my post and must have had another senior moment e.g 12 pup Im glad you all no I meant ( 12week old pup ) I gave the larger knuckle bones to the other older dogs but think I will not give marrow bone to pup as yet GypsyX

I've given all my dogs small uncooked beef marrow bones and they've been fine. Handsome George gets a new one each week from my butcher Gordon Clarke in Penrith. When he's eaten all the marrow and all the meat off the outside he plays with them. I've had 2 x rottweillers and 2 x neapolitan mastiffs, all dogs with exceptional crush power in their jaws but never had a problem. I wouldn't buy them from a market though, I only give my dogs bones from cattle under 30 months old as they can catch BSE from infected bones. Why is life never simple??

What difference is there buying them from a market? they all have to kill the animals under strict licence! We have sold marrow and knuckle bones on our pet stall on the market for the past fifteen years with no problems. Marrow bones may break in half if dropped on a hard surface such as a paving slab, but wont splinter. Very strong jawed dogs may break them with their teeth, so I would recommend knuckle bones for them. Knuckle bones won't splinter. My Lancashire Heeler puppies had knuckle bones from the age of 3 weeks. My GSD's also had knuckle bones from a very young age, and never had a problem with dirty teeth, or chewing shoes, handbags, furniture.

You would have to be very unlucky to get an injury from a bone, much the same chance as with eating a stick and getting a bit of wood stuck, or a chewing on a pig's ear and swallowing a bit whole - it can happen, but is a very small percentage against how many are sold every day and eaten world wide.

Gave the pup the marrow bone today he loved it , his teeth did not even make a dent , and it kept him amused for ages , so ive decided to give as treat on occasions thanks for replys GypsyX
