Cat meets new kitten

Since I brought home a new kitten, my cat (neutered male, 3 years old) stays away from her. I got the kitten because I thought she'd be a playmate for my cat, and certainly the kitten does want to play. My cat, however, is scared of her and runs away to hide in another room. He's such a woos. I've had the kitten for a week now. Will my cat ever outgrow his cowardice?

If Tom has been on his own for a long time, he may naturally be quite nervous of a boisterous kit, especially if he doesn't play a lot himself. Also, he may be feeling left out and rejected, now that you have a little cutie to fuss over! Make plenty of time for Tom's cuddles and playtime, and he will come round in the end. Something similar happened with my son's cat when he got another, but by giving it loads of attention and cuddles, it now gets on well with its housemate.
Try a really good game of chase the bit of string when the 2 of them can both see what you are doing. I have found that most cats can't resist it, and it can be very helpful when you are trying the get 2 cats to come closer together as they tend to get so carried away with the game that they allow eachother to get a lot nearer than they usually would...& this allows everyone to get a good sneaky sniff at eachother & before you know it they are playing together. Be patient & let your old cat come round at his own pace...don't panic,at least he's not getting aggressive with the new kitten, good luck.
