Not all dogs can catch. I have 1 dog which can and one dog which can't, not even food. If I throw him a titbit it just hits him on the head!

Some dogs simply don't have the 'catch' gene, others won't chase sticks, or anything else for that matter. It;s just an individual quirk that your dog has, but get the vet to check his eyes next time you are there, just to be on the safe side.
