Hi i have a 17 month old white staffy and he wears a leather hornes when he goes for his walks and he has got scabs under his legs witch are weesing and he as pink bloches down his chest and his legs he is fine in his self eating and drinking as normal many thanks

I am not an expert on dogs, but I do have a Westie and also had one that passed away 5 years ago.
They are prone to rashes, my present Westie does not have this, but my last one did.
He was treated by the Vet with steroids to start with and also special shampoo.
After that, the Vet prescibed Piriton which is an antihistamine. IT did help the rash and also the itching.
It may be an idea to try just a soft collar and lead on him.
Take him to the Vet anyway as they will prescribe the proper medication.
Hope he is better soon.

Just a thought. No idea if Staffies are prone to rashes. Hopefully Lankeela will come on this thread and help you out.

Depending on the fit of the harness, it could be the harness rubbing. A different harness or collar might help.
I would also take him to the vet to get him checked out, things like demadectic mange is very uncomfortable and itchy for the dog and also contagious.

Could he be allergic to the dressing used on the leather? Best to get him checked out by vet

I think this is more to do with being white than anything to do with the leather harness. Try bathing him in some mild shampoo such as tea tree oil, and make sure he has been deflead. If this does not help them the vet will prescribe some tablets or something to wash him in which will help. Also could be to do with the food. Try giving him some chicken and rice or lamb and rice, as it could be a high protein diet which is making him heat up and itch. Garlic tablets can also help cool the blood.

It is quite common for horses to get scabby weeping rashes from leather tack when being brought back into work after a break. The skin should be considered 'soft' until it is gradually acustomed to the contact & pressure. Wiping the unbroken skin before work with surgical or methalated spirits is thought to help prevent this. Using sheepskin covers/ padding also helps because it spreads the pressure over a larger surface area & can be washed to keep it clean. Bathing the skin with salt solution after work is a cheap remedy if a person is careless enough to do this to their horse! Generally this is more common on white areas. Maybe this is what happened to your dog? You do not say how long he's been wearing his harness or if he's used to wearing it for extended periods or all year round. Leather is made using chemicals some of which could get on the skin after being out in the rain causing an allergic reaction. cruella is right to recommend a quick vet trip because they will quickly rule out a lot of potential causes & can give the most effective treatments. Hi thanx for your replys been to vets he has a infection he had a needle and 2 lots of tablets and spot on flea treatment 60 quid in total bought a coller till it clears up many thanx.

Get rid of the harness. They are only good for dogs that are bred for pulling, like sled dogs.

Don't get me started - I don't want to hi-jack your thread! lol Vet fees are getting a bit steep - my vets used to be the best value around. Shop around for the basic healthcare & frontline is much cheaper on the internet. A written prescription is free from the vet & medications are better value on the net too because most vets add dispensing fees to the cost of the medicine too. Tell your lad 'get well soon'.

Hi just to say Max is fine now thanxs for all ur replys i no what you mean showcatbenga about vets fees they are steep any way thanx again. What do people think of harneses are they any good are is a coller best ?
