I tend to go out once the streets have quietened down a bit and call him. Sometimes I find him, sometimes I don't and he rocks up later. If neighbours have gone away, try calling outside their garages (inquisitive youngsters WILL get themselves shut in), if you have open spaces near you try walking through there and calling. Unfortunately, I always end up checking the main road too - just to satisfy myself he is not there.
The longest he went for was 4 days.

Campbell cat went missing 2 years ago at this time of year. After 2 days, we leafleted the street with pictures of her, and a guy a few doors down found her. She had gone into his house through an open window, and he'd then gone to stay at his girlfriend's for a couple of nights and shut her in.
If your cat is as nosy as Campbell, might be worth asking down the street. She's not quite as curious these days...

Could you try putting up posters in local shops/on lamp posts?
I do know how worried you are. I am worried about ASBO now, but I know how often he has done this to me and he normally comes home safe and sound!!! If people have gone away, it may well be worth checking garages and sheds - call outside and you will get a pathetic little miaow in response!
