One of my partner's mum's Staffies has a smooth stone he likes to play with. He can sit for ages with this stone between his front paws and just licks it over and over again. What sort of pleasure could he derive from licking a stone?
The other Staffie, is deaf and she will spend ages just licking the carpet, what could this mean? Is she getting some kind of sensation from this, which is heightened because she lacks hearing?
It is a form of obsessive compulsive disorder, much like tail chasing or trying to catch shadows. Dogs often do things because they are bored or lack stimulation, although sometimes they do it just because they can!
Yes I agree with lankeela, staffies do get the repetitive compulsive urge , my staffie Max used to be like that but we cured him, he would repeatedly steal food from the fridge by opening the door with his nose, we cured him by getting an integrated fridge which he can't find now : ))
My friend's dog used to lick people's feet at every opportunity. Eventually we figured out she liked sweat, and anything else salty. Maybe the stone has a minerally taste he likes?
But repeatedly licking a carpet..I don't know...if it isn't compulsive repetitive behaviour, well, it must just feel nice on her tongue?!
