Jack Russell

I rescued a young jack russell a few weeks ago, he is lovely and very good in every way apart from when i want to catch him or call him in. we have a very big but enclosed garden and its lovely to watch him playing and running with our other dog but whenever we try to call him in he takes no notice whatsoever and it takes ages to catch him. we'vr always had dogs and never had this trouble before just wondered if anyone has any tips on over coming it? when he is on his lead he pulls constantly too - would a harness help? or any other suggestions please?

What I do with my pup at the park is call him every now and then and give him lots of fuss and some treats when he comes, then let him go and play again. When its time to go I call him and give some treats then clip the lead on.
You could maybe try a similar thing in the garden?

The problem here is trying to establish his coming to you in the garden. He needs to establish first in much more confined conditions mostly in the house! If you try this in the garden it is obvious that he will win the battle as once out you have no control. Get other family members to call him for no reason at all in the house say from the kitchen to the lounge and give him a treat every time without fail when he comes and make a game of it. Rememer, do not shout, scold or slap if he does not respond, just real excitment, praise and kisses when he does. He will learn to come to you for the fun of it and for the reward of food and then when you really need him to come he will do it automatically without thinking and it will not be asssociated with end of play etc.
