Probably your little dog had slept most of the day, and you didn't know this was going to happen. And you were with him at the very end to say goodbye and hug him. He has had a lovely long life with you.
Nothing anyone can say will make you feel better, let the tears flow herbie!
Thinking of you.

As said so many times on this site, Herbie this is something that every pet lover has had to go through at some time, and no matter how many time you experiance it it never gets any easier, but it does get better in time when you realise that you did the right thing for somebody you loved. Eventually you'll come to remember him with a smile and not a tear and maybe you'll get a new friend, till then if you just need shoulder to cry onn you;ll find plenty here who know just how you feel.
I's so very sorry for your loss herbie. My labrador died suddenly in his sleep 12 years ago and I still miss him so much. He was only 7 and it was such a shock but remember that you had him put to sleep because you loved him so much. You did the best for him and he obviously had a wonderful life.
Time is a healer but it will take time until you start feeling better.
My thoughts are with you xx

Hello Herbie,
Please don't be sad, try and see the truth which is that your dog was poorly and you did the most you could for him, it wasn't fair to keep him alive and let him be ill, and that's what you saw. You did a very unselfish thing yesterday and your pet will be proud. Also he was very old and I do beleive he lived a very good life and lived longer because he was happy x
I had to do the same thing two years ao with my staffie, she was 15 years old and I loved her so much, she knew when I was upset and in her own way could comfort me. I'll never forget her and hope one day when I have to go she'll be there waiting, no one could ever replace her but I cherish all the happy memories I had with her x It was a very sad time to see her go to sleep one last time, but she was free from the pain....as will your beloved pet, no more hurting for him now, and no more hurting for you..keep strong, he's happier now xxx

I can't say anything that will make you feel any better today, but those of us who are pet lovers/owners know just how you're feeling and what you are going through - don't give yourself a hard time because you were away from him, you were there when it mattered most to him and that's the most important thing.
Nothing seems to help just now but take heart knowing we're all with you in thoughts and I hope it helps a little.
best wishes, S xx
Herbie,
You did the only thing possible.
I feel so much for you at this time, your heart is breaking and you feel so very sad.
Time heals all things , trust me, but for the moment try and remember the good times, and if the tears flow just let them.
Mr Herbie is probably grieving as well , so love each other and be as kind as you possible can.

The minute we start to care, there is pain at the end.
That simple statement sums up the joy and sorrow of a pet.
Nothing is going to make you feel better right now - your pain is too new and too raw, but please take comfort from those who know who confirm that you did what was right for your friend, even though it hurt you so much.
In the days to come, the pain will be replaced by the memories of how much fun you had, and what a good life your friend enjoyed with you.
Finally, the pain will be a little ache, soon covered over by the joy you remember.
That is what our pets do for us. That is what makes caring worthwhile, even though the pain must come.
It is always worth it in the end.

herbie i am so sorry to hear your sad news as everyone else has said you did the last thing that you could for him and made his passing as good as it could be, you did not put it off and keep him suffering just because you did not want to let him go, you put him first not yourself and that is the last thing we can do for our beloved pets, the hurting never stops you will just get used to it and put it in a little corner in your head , ruthxxx
yep lady eyre cant believe how the bitch from hell came in to mine lol, there was me greiving for my kelly, and then my son found a wee beautiful grey kitten who either was kicked out,or feral well 8 years on this little bundle of fun come funny come annoying furball is so part of my life, she is my world!!!
I am so sorry for your loss. I know it hurts terribly but you know that you made the only decision that you could make. Your pet knew how much he was loved and you gave him a lovely life. Try to think of all the wonderful times and happy memories that you have of him...his last day was very unfortunate but it is not your fault and you have to let go of it...he is surely at peace now and you must put an end to your own suffering. Cry and cry some more - there is no shame in that....most marriages dont last as long as 14 years so you have a lot of emotions and feelings to deal with. It will take time and will hurt but you will be okay and will start to remember all the good times and will start to smile when you think of him. Get a beautiful photograph, put it in a beautiful frame and display it where he will still be a big part of your life. Take care. xx
