You are probably thinking of the Golden Pheasant. There are a few living wild in Britain, I know six that nave been living loosely together for years. BTW the females look exactly like ordinary hen pheasants
There are dozens, but not too many large ones -- those already mentioned are smaller or similar to the "common" pheasant. Some possibilities:
Tragopan
Argus pheasant
Peafowl
I'd say the last is the most likely, if it's a quiz clue, or a derivative (peahen etc). Can't name the male, of course...
