Just lately i've seen a heron visiting all the garden ponds in my area,How do they survive when everthing is frozen over?

Once saw a heron on a frozen ploughed field trying to swallow a frozen dead rat whole. I expect they eat whatever is available if they can't get a fish supper.

herons will break small hoes into frozen ponds to get to the fish, they will also feed in larger ponds lakes etc that aren't frozen
