I got a phone call from a friend last night, sadly her Labrador died yesterday, he managed to root out some chocolate cream eggs she had hidden for her grandchildren, he ate about 6 of them, he ate them on Friday night while she was out and had been sick, he seemed okay after that so she didn't worry too much but when she got up in the morning he wasn't at all well so she rushed him to the vet but unfortunately he died just as he was put on the table, the vet said if my friend had taken him as soon as he had eaten the chocolate they might have saved him. Poor little boy was only 4. The vet said he dreaded Easter because too many dogs die from eating chocolate This is just a warning to all you dog owners who don't know how toxic chocolate can be. :-{
They are chocolate Stompe but with the theobromine removed, that's the toxic part, it affects the heart and can cause kidney failure very quickly, that's what happened to my friends dog :-{ xxx
Perhaps it affects some dogs more than others but it's better not to take any chances, if your dog has eaten chocolate get it to a vet asap.
Stompe, Not feeling very sexy this morn, :-}
Hole bag ?? xx
I worked with a woman who had 2 dogs & she fed them a cadburys thick & chunky bar each every day. I mentioned that chocolate can be toxic for dogs but she scoffed & said "that's rubbish."
Oh well, it mustn't effect her dogs?
She must be having you on, if the dogs had had that much chocolate every day they would be dead by now, apart from the toxic affect she must be a bit stupid if she gives her dogs any kind of treats like that every day, I bet her dogs are well over weight, stupid woman, when will people learn, as much as we love them dogs are dogs and should be treated like dogs not children. Dogs digestive systems are not designed to eat human food.
What a sad story gelda. I stopped a young girl who was feeding her dog a chocolate bar and asked her if she realised how dangerous it was. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything or interfered, but I seriously thought she may not realise how dangerous chocolate is to dogs.
She said she knew, but she had always done it and the dog enjoyed it so much she would continue!! Oh well.
The higher the cocoa content the worse it is for dogs. The really dark chocolate is like feeding it poison. However, I don't give my dogs any at all!
Don't forget grapes and sultanas can kill as well.
There are all sorts of foods that are poisoness to dogs but a lot of dog owners don't realise and can't be bothered to find out about, I think vets should inform owners about them when they register a dog with them. Also I wonder how many cat owners know that an aspirin can kill a cat.
That's very sad gelda - sorry for your friend's loss. Dogs love chocolate unfortunately and are very good at sniffing it out but people really don't seem to understand the danger.
I did know about aspirin and cats - I had to put someone right on that a while back when they wanted to give some as a painkiller
I think really all vets should have a big notice up warning of the dangers to cats and dogs because I think most of these problems are caused through ignorance.
I love dogs as much as any dog lover, BUT, I hope someone gives a load of it to a neighbours Alsation as it never stops barking all day long. We have politely asked the owners to do something about it and all we get from them is "I`ts only doing it`s job"
It's not the dogs fault for gods sake, it's probably couped up all day or left by it's self, alsations are working dogs and need a lot of physical and mental stimulation.
Report it to the RSPCA and poison the owners !!
