Hi mandimoo. These aren't crane flies you're seeing hun (daddy long legs), but possibly a type of fly or moth which can come out in swarms at this time of the year.
Daddy long legs emerge from lawns and soil as adults around September time. Fortunately they only live for about 2 days, but like you, I can't stand them. Irrational fear, as they don't hurt us, but I think they're horrible-looking things. : )
They are called the St. Marks Fly, so called because they usually appear around the 25th April, St. Marks Day. They live for around a fortnight. They are jet black with long dangly legs. Totally harmless, but not pleasant to look at!

my cat has been eating them by the thousands - get the cat out there for a feast!
