Blackbird egg found

Hi, we rescued a single turquoise and brown speckled egg from a nest (blackbird?) that was almost completely destroyed by accident while cutting back a big sword plant. There was only one egg. Not sure if it was laid this year. It was very cold. Anyway I have it in my bra. Does anyone have any idea if it is likely to be an old egg that never hatched or if it is still viable. If the latter, any advice on caring and hatching? Thanks

Passerine's eggs are inherently dificult to incubate as they need to be kept within a half degree C of the ideal. Only the more sophisticated incubators will hatch eggs from birds other than ground-birds.
If the egg is 2/3rd through the incubating process it will be easier to hatch but as it is very cold it has almost certainly expired.

If there was only one egg it is probable that the hen had just started laying. She will soon build another nest somewhere else and relay a clutch. There is still plenty of time.

Blackbirds will often build several nests, and the female may lay eggs in more than one. However, they'll only incubate the eggs in one of the nests. If the egg you found was cold immediately from the nest, it sounds like it's one of the abandoned ones.

Thank you very much for your replies. The egg fell out of my bra when i bent down to pick something up and broke. I was upset at first but now it seems it was not going to hatch anyway. Thank you.
