Feeling a little down today. We are due at the weekend to go and visit my only son and his family who live in the Shetland Islands for three weeks, haven't seen them for six months, longing to see my grandaughters !! ! but we are leaving our 18 year old cat in the care of a neighbour as we felt a 8 hour car journey plus an overnight ferry journey would be too much for him at his big age. He knows the neighbour well, goes into her house quite regularly and has a cat flap in our house to go and out of the garden.. we got our suitcase from the loft and I swear he knows what is going on as he is around us constantly whereas usually he is on the spare bed and asleep most of the morning !
We have never left him this long before, usually going away for the most 10 days, anyone with similiar cirmumstances who can salve my conscience?

They will take up residence on your sofa and not move until you arrive home again.
More or less what any 18 year old male would do.
I hope that he will be okay, it is not as if you are going to abandon him. (The first time I left my late cat at the cattery I phoned every couple of days - but he was fine).
Enjoy your holiday in Shetland Islands - sounds windy and cold.

I think the main thing is you are leaving him in his own home, much better for him , he will be fine and knowing the neighbour will be alot better than a stranger. He will probably laze about .But expect him to ignore you when you come back [ mine do] it's only to show you that he could not car less lol.Have a nice holiday and don't worry, he will be fine.I would say that the catflap should be locked at night,to stop any strange cat from entering as that could well upset your cat.g.
