Bob our male hob castrated , Has started beeing very sick and when i mean sick he cant eat, We took him to the emergency vets this afternoon and the vet checked him over, my poor daughter was crying so hard and covered in sick, and the vet said that his temperature was low and she could not feel any obstructions, but aparently when some ferretts get to 3/4 its common for them to get tumours, we have had him 4 years he lives in a huge avery in the garden and an rspca rescue so we have no idea on age, He has had 30 mils of sailin under his skin which was not pleasant may i add also an anti sickness drug under his skin and antibiotics from tomorrow am......has anyone else had this in there ferrets....the vet said i could feed him from six onwards kibble is definately a no go, I then wetted itand liquidised it and he is so so hungry but after eating he then walks backwards crying trying to regurgitate it, I have since spoken to the vets and they have suggested starving him to give his tummy a rest, He has poohed normally twice but cant get alot passed his throat.

any help would be great
many thanks

Hi I am so sorry to hear about your ferret. I have no experience of them myself, but it may be worth your while getting advice from members on a ferret forum.

well I tried to get on to some forums but never managed it, We went back to the emergency vets tonight at 5pm, typical on a sunday, Vets are not very clued up on ferrets at all, in 25 years he had never seen a ferret that has been sick, I got up at 2 am and gave him some cat food as he cannot keep ferret kibble down at all, he ate some of it and was sick but just bringing up loads of mucuse stuff, then at 5.30 kate my daughter got up and gave him some and he seemed brighter, then me at 8.30 and he was very sick only Mucus but loads and he was in pain, that is how the day has been really, tonight the vets gave him 3 injections, and he has been abit brighter today but not great, I gave him some liquidised kibble that i had sofened with boiling water, and he ate some of it but it just seems as though it gets stuck, the strange thing is some of it is getting down and he is poohing normaly, I asked for a glucose test as it a sign of pancreatic cancer and it came out fine, he is wobbly on his back end and vet put it down to beeing week but he is fast asleep now, I pray its just stomach ulcer or bacterial infection, but vet has said it could be anything cancer, blockage, We have to waite and see thanks for your intrest, back to vets tomorrow....bob is such a sweety and i want to give him a good chance, hoping tomorrow is better!! and th pain he is in is only when he is sick and he is fine after
josaphine --you must be worried sick --hope you all have a better night. There is only my little dog and myself but we will think of him and say a doggy prayer for him when we go to bed. Good luck.Brenda.
I hope he has a better night. I have never had a ferret, but they always look so cute, and I do feel for you. Keep us informed.
Josaphine, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the poor wee ferret. xxx

He has been so so sick again tonight in the end I have phoned a ferret rescue center for some advice, and she said that i needed to find a ferret friendly vets on google and i have found one in high wycombe i will be there in he morning, she also said did they prescribe baytril and i said yes and she said she had only ever seen a ferrets as sick as like bob is beeing ( mucuse flemmy) through this drug, Yesterday when he was sick he was bringing up food not mucuse, any way he has had a big snog and slept on the sofa with us tonight, and then got up as he needed a pooh, so he is tucked up for the night.....I have cooked boiled chicken and liquidised it ready for the morning, I am going to try to give his tummy arrest tonight.

thanks all

he is not as sick as yesterday, but has not ben for a pooh, I truthfully think its either a tumour or blockage, we have an appointment thismorning at 10.30 with a specialist, I have spent so much money on him this weekend christmas is cancelled and i only have £18.00 in the bank till tomorrow......oh the joys
Josaphine, how did the appointment go? (I'm still keeping everything crossed here).

well we are all hoping its a severe case of gastroenteritis, I showed the vet bob beeing sick after eating, she checked him all over and says she can feel a small hard lump in his tummy which everytime she prodded he cried, she has taken him off every medication that the previous vet gaveus and she gave him an Amoxycillin injection, and brought back Duphamox, Flagyl, Noroclav, to start from tonight, He was really good up to 3pm and had not been sick at all, and then i think we over did the chicken feeding and he was sick and griping tummy ache, but it passed in a minute, He passed a very collitus pooh earlier, so hopefully these new drugs will start to kick in. I really hope so.
he has been a brave little pin cushion this weekend

thanks for asking
jo
glad he is a little bit better hopefully he will start to pick up with the new drugs dont worry about xmas the best present for you all will be if he is ok
Question Author
That is very true,
thanks
I hope that Bob gets well in time for Christmas. It is awful when a little furry friend is ill - they depend on us for so much.

Susan
It all sounds a lot more promising for the little one -- a sensible vet by the sounds of it. Go a bit easy on the feeding for the mo , but you know him better than I.
He has had such a rough time lately and I am sure that there is plenty of TLC , which is more than helpful to him . He has probably been very frightened by all this and when the meds kick in he may well be on the up turn .Please give him the gentlest of hugs from Honey and me .
Keep us posted please we all have everything crossed.Brenda.
