Does she howl when you are with her in the evening?

she leaves the room & goes to the door & howls like a wolf. When I let her out carries on, standing her ground facing open land.

The dog cowers indoors.

Just asked tamborine because it can be a sign of dementia in old dogs, but your GS isn't that old.

All my eight howl at dusk ! I used to think it might annoy the neighbours (even though they're a good way awa,y the eerie sound carries) and I tried to distract them. Then I gave up and joined in instead. They looked at me, howling away, and promptly stopped. It doesn't stop it altogether but certainly abbreviates the performance.. So try that. All together now 'Aaaah - woooooooo- yow !"

No ? Well, howling at night is more a characteristic of some breeds than others. The ring leaders in my mob are Wolfhounds, who have evidently decided they're more 'wolf' than 'hound'.. I bet that GSDs are a howling breed. In the wild, wolves do it to have a roll call of the pack at night, to ensure everybody is back, and at other times to tell other packs where they are, to define hunting areas. Yours has reverted ! This may be early dementia, she's got some instinctive behaviour surfacing which previously was hidden but, in itself, the behaviour is not abnormal. Does she cower for long? I had a GSD who would act out of character, suddenly turn aggressive for a few seconds, stop, look bewildered, and then cower in a corner, without me saying or doing anything. It had a brain tumour. That's a ( remote?) possibility with yours.
