I've got a bat on the wall down by the washing line.... He's very near ground level and I'd really like him to move from there. Should I poke him with a broomstick and get him to fly away? Will he bite me or my dog?
Just leave him be - he'll be trying to hide from the light. I had a colony of 450+ bats living in the roofspace of my flat (they've blocked off access now so hopefully the bats will hve to find another roost this year) but I saw plenty of them over the years and they'll leave you and your dog alone so long as you leave them.
he won't bite but if the sun will be on the area where he is now he might appreciate some shade Keep the dog away though More because it isn't worth the risk of injury to the bat from an over inquisitive pooch.
He's not been able to get back to his roost and is trying to find a dark place. I even had some get into the house on occassion and as soon as the light went on they would try and bury their faces into dark corners. If it's really bothering you, get some thick gardening gloves and scoop it up in a towel , then let it go elsewhere (preferably somewhere shaded). Otherwise leave him - he'll go when it gets dark.
It's got more to fear from you and your dog than you both have from it! Leave it be or find it some shade as suggested. What the heck do you want to 'poke it' for?
