saw it today, in the country side, but on a semi busy road in an area where there is a river and lots of farmland. this bird landed at the side of the road and it was brightly coloured (but im afraid the details are not there, passed too quickly). however, i could probably say that it stood quite upright in stance and estimate it to have been 9ish inches tall, and its head was not large in comparison to its body and its beak wasnt particulary large either. im sure there was blue and red in there, but dont think i saw any white. i know thats very vague. ive looked at woodpeckers and cukoos and dont think its them.
it wasnt fat enough for a pheasant. after looking at the rspb website i think it may have been a jay, although the jays in the picture look smaller than i would have put the bird i saw. i was in my car though, and passed it very quickly.
If you go on the RSPB website they`ve got a brilliant Bird Identifier where you click on all the factors ie size, then colour of beak etc and it shows you by a system of elimination what it can be. I used it a while ago and to be honest, I wouldn`t even bother asking on here - just go straight there!
