We have lived on this lane for over 50 years and I have never seen anything like this before------About 3p.m. I caught a glimpse of what looked like a swallow darting past the window. When I went to the door there were about a dozen House Martins(not a bird we see a lot of in this area. ) They were flying and darting up the road , weaving in and out of the trees and some were flying quite low over the tops of parked cars. This carried on for about twenty minutes. Fascinating to watch. There seemed to be a mix of older birds and youngsters. Would they have been getting ready to migrate?
Sorry ferlew, I got carried away and instead of asking a question put the above on your thread.
But to answer you --we have lots of baby sparrows in our garden. Feeding from the feeders and splashing about in the bird bath.
Don't know about the goldfinch because we never see them in our area.
It does seem very strange, ferlew at this time of the year!
I keep hearing people say, that things got off to a late start this year but even so, it's not what I would expect at this time of the year.
It's ok, I just wanted someone to agree it's a bit odd.
I think the blackies raised 2 broods, sparrows and finches on about brood 4 we think.
Housemartins also had 3 broods, they nest on my burglar alarm. (I have to clean to poop).
We only saw one lot of baby green finches.
Same here - hundreds of baby sparrows. Mrs blackbird VERY busy too. Lots and lots of bird activity. There were 2 jays in our garden last week; unfortunately I missed them Grrrr
