The robin is a natural garden companion - and what's more English than gardening?
Apparently they turn up so much in early art because they like hanging around over-turned earth - and people tend to do a lot of turning. They used to follow the wild boar about, and then when people turned up and started farming they started following them about.
Really, if pigs could draw we'd have even earlier records of the robin.
