..but for the first time ever we have had a pair of Linnet in the back garden. They were collecting the dog hair after our lab was brushed yesterday. I am thrilled to see something different and yes, when it comes to wildlife, I am easily pleased.

Just spent ten minutes watching a thrush batter a snail shell on stones then on a flagstone and eventually it got its prize.

It is always good to see something different. On our local stream-side walk we have had blackcaps for the first time ever...and the dippers which had been missing for three years are back.

We have never seen a Thrush in our garden but they are in our local park. I have yet to see a Dipper anywhere except on the tv. Our Greenfinches disappeared for about three years. I have seen a couple this year, one was on the feeder about five minutes after I saw the Linnets!

We have thrushes - both song and missel - on the local field. Streamside the size ranges from wren ( and somebody saw goldcrests earlier in the year ) to heron. My record in a five or so minute walk is twelve different species. I am looking forward to my trip to Ilfracombe in July. I usually manage to see rock pipits on the cliffs there and this time I shall have a day trip to Lindy to see the puffins etc.

I grew up knowing all the general birds,but never really interested to any extent. Then some years ago,I saw a bird I'd never seen before and had to look it up because i wanted to know what it was! Turned out to be a Hooded Crow and i was hooked from then on:-) I am delighted every time i see a new bird to me,anywhere, so congrats jakep,enjoy :-)

I don't think you are easily pleased jakep, nature and wildlfe are wonderful and I LOVE watching the birds feeding in my small garden. I've never seen a linnet.

I agree with Chaptaz - I have lots of lovely wildlife outside my window and never tire of it, last week I went away to Northumbria - a remote cottage , wonderful views.

To sit on a bench in the garden surrounded by the call of Curlews (never heard by me in reality before) and have a Mistle Thrush sit on the fence watching me, was a wonder.

Thank you all for your positive replies. I think that part of the reason for my love of wildlife, particularly birds, is that it does bring a feeling of calm to be outside and quiet.
