Yesterday, in my local park, I watched a small flock of fieldfares eating rowan berries .

Are they back early or haven't they left yet?

Never seen them in a flock, must be quite a sight.
I've only ever seen them singularly, on the golf course.

There were about eight of them, its was lovely to watch.
Probably new arrivals Tills. Yes they are a tad early. To coin a phrase "Winter is Coming". (G.O.T.)

it was lovely ^

Yes, Togo. They are probably early birds. Thanks for the link.
They came regularly in October to fields behind my previous house, would stay there for several hours then off they went.

Unusually the dozens of swallows here lined up on the wires making a real racket on the first Sunday in August, very early, suddenly they all swooped away, off they went.

Odd, isn't it? Birds leaving early and arriving early.

I'm going to take my camera with me when I go out today. There might be some redwings about as well.
They must know something that we don't know!
It's Not unusual for a few Redwings and Fieldfare to arrive in August but the majority fly-in towards the end of September and beginning of October. I think the Redwings are prettier than other Thrushes.

We didn't see any today. You never see anything when you have your binoculars and camera to hand!
Maybe they are a little early this year but luckily so are the fruits on which they feast.
Thanks Tilly, pack my bino's and keep a lookout for them.

I hope you have some luck, Chip. We didn't see any again yesterday but each day there's a possibility.

Hi Tilly, I've decided to start getting into walking again (dog or not), no fieldfares today but I did see a large buzzard souring high in the deep blue sky this morning.
Some of the oak trees weighed heavy with acorns, while neighboring trees had very poor yields
Have not heard of Fieldfares before so had to google - lovely birds, we must be too far north to see them. Happy to report though that we have spotted Nuthatches in the garden for the first time ever this year. (Again, a bird that I'd never seen or heard of prior to spring this year, but a quick google and look at the RSPB site confirmed).

Nuthatches are lovely. You are lucky to have them, Peas.
I heard a redwing today, not 200yds from SUfC football ground.
Question Author
Chip we often see Buzzards and Kites. My favourite is the Kestrel family we have. I love to see and hear them calling to each other. I love falcons.

Just the one, Melv?
Yes, Tilly, just the one.
