I was talking to a neighbor in my garden, when all of a sudden, a greater spotted woodpecker flew right into his face, stopping just a few inches from his face before flying off again.

It seemed to me that the bird was angry or trying to intimidate. I've never seen anything like it, any ideas ?.

Woodpecker babies to protect?
Do you have feeders? Our woodpeckers love the peanuts. Does your
neighbour have a peanut coloured face (very attractive!)that the bird
mistakenly took for lunch?

Thats a strong possibility, Wolf.
We were sat talking quietly, a good 30m -100 feet from where I think the nest is. A tawny owl was seen about 15 minutes earlier, maybe that too made it edgy.

Funnily enough Haras, He was sitting close to the feeder and his skin is the colour of peanut butter plus a beard that looks like that on a coconut, maybe you're on to something ?
MAYBE YOUR NEIGHBOR GOT TO CLOSE TO THE WOODPECKERS NEST. THE WOODPECKER WAS WARNING HIM TO STAY AWAY.
