Some people like to be there to stroke and talk to their pet as he slips away, others find the idea too upsetting, so you need to go with your instincts and do what feels right for you.
When he has his injection, he will slip away within a few seconds, it's not at all drawn out, so you may want to say your goodbye and walk away - it is something you need to decide, and stick to, before you set off.
Hope this helps - thinking of you.
I'm so sorry to hear about your cat liz.
When our Smudge sadly had to be put down, my husband & youngest daughter cuddled her whilst the vet gave her an injection & until she fell into an everlasting peaceful asleep.
I & our other daughter, on the other hand, were standing just outside the surgery door unable to watch.
Everyone is different, so just to what your heart tells you. I'm sure the vet won't mind either way.
Thinking of you.
i hope things go ok on thursday.
when the time comes if you do or dont stay with your cat if you want time afterwards to spend saying goodbye dont be afraid to say.
the cat will have a small amount of hair clipped from its leg and will be given an injection into the vein (an overdose of anaesethic) and should slip away in a few seconds . the vet sometimes gets the nurse to come in and assist in raising the vein and holding the cat but make sure that if you want your close enough to stroke and comfort your cat.
verity x
